I’m going to speak about decision-centric approach to Game UI / UX. I’m going to start from defining values applicable to players experience and game UI, proceed to UI development pipeline, tools and give a virtual example on how it works.

  1. Game Interface is not similar to the Machine / Tool Interface and can’t be measured with industrial design values.
  2. Game UI combines artistic values with interactivity, while aiming player’s experience. ‘form follows function’ is a suitable approach.
  3. Calling events happening in the game universe with decisions taken by players, gives option to formalize UI function.
  4. Game decisions model follows a set of math-like rules. There is an turn-key model to work with this decisions.
  5. Pipeline: form follows function = values -> decisions flow -> mindmap -> wireframe -> artistic objective -> fake screens -> playable prototype
